The project  is a new State of the Art Primary  & Community Health Care Facility and involved  the fit out of a  Health Centre and Offices of total area c.6050m² within the new Civic Centre building at Ballymun, Co. Dublin for the HSE Northern Area spread over 3 storeys of the existing Building.

The facility is intended to be the focal point for the provision of health and social services in Ballymun and its surrounding areas. It offers a unique One Stop Shop diagnostic and treatment facility and minor injuries facility. It will act as a base for the Board's field staff and will provide clinical, social and day-care services to the community as well as a base for the Local Area HSE Offices.

The Design Strategy for the interiors was to:

• Create a welcoming warm environment which was not forbidding or institutional.
• Use natural materials including timber, glass and planting.
• Be contemporary, modern and forward looking in approach.
• Use natural light and ventilation wherever possible in the existing building.
• Use low maintenance and user friendly cost effective materials.
• Maximise potential in waiting areas to overlook the Atrium or garden.

Colour is used extensively as a design tool with:

• Predominant Theme Colours ( terracotta, mint green and aquamarine ) to provide a unifying colour on each floor so that users can easily identify what  floor they are on.
• Signpost Contrasting Different Colours and materials to mark out reception areas and focal points
• Identity created for the facility with strong memorable colours
• Use of graphic Symbols and patterns to define circulation routes and waiting areas

The resulting design is arranged around a series of welcoming, varied and colourful medical ‘streets’ on each floor level. All visitors to the Health Centre are met at various reception counters which have adjoining waiting areas. All levels include a number of general public day services (e.g. Medical Clinics) and specialist services (e.g. Dental, physiotherapy and Psychiatry). The first and second floors include office space that is provided for the HSE Local area Offices.
